Although considered a fruit, the fig is actually a flower inverted into itself. The seeds are the real fruit and figs ripen fully and semi-dry on the tree. The fig compound, angelicin, is currently being investigated for the treatment of skin cancer and have been recommended for clinical trials because they have such a low skin toxicity. Figs also contain anticancer compounds of benzaldehyde and coumarins. A serious fruit!
